As winter temperatures drop globally, Ray Chemical would like to share some professional insights regarding the handling of construction additives. Products such as Redispersible Polymer Powder (RDP) and Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) are sensitive to environmental changes. Proper care during transit and storage is essential to ensure they perform consistently on the job site.
To help you avoid common issues like caking or moisture absorption during cold seasons, please consider the following logistics and storage suggestions.
The primary risk during winter shipping is condensation. When a container moves through different climate zones, moisture can form inside the bags even if they do not get wet directly.
Seal Checks: We recommend ensuring all pallets are well-wrapped with stretch film to provide a basic barrier against damp air.
Container Inspection: It is a good practice to check containers for any leaks or holes before loading to prevent snow or rain from entering during transit.
HPMC and RDP are hydroscopic, meaning they can absorb moisture from the air. In winter, warehouse floors are often significantly colder than the air, leading to dampness.
Use Pallets: Always store bags on wooden or plastic pallets. Never place them directly on concrete floors, as the temperature difference can cause the powder to clump (caking).
Stable Environment: Ideally, store products in a dry, ventilated area. Avoid placing bags near external walls where frost may build up, or directly next to intense heat sources which might affect the packaging material.
RDP is a thermoplastic powder. Under the combined pressure of heavy stacking and low temperatures, the particles can press together, leading to "mechanical caking."
Stacking Height: During extreme cold, consider reducing the stacking height of RDP pallets to minimize pressure on the bottom bags.
Inventory Turnover: Follow a "First-In, First-Out" (FIFO) policy. Using older stock first ensures that no product stays in the warehouse for an extended period during the winter months.
For the best results, if the additives have been stored in a very cold warehouse, try moving the bags to a warmer area (around 20°C) for 24 hours before use. This helps the powder reach a stable temperature, ensuring optimal solubility and workability when mixed into mortars or adhesives.
Proper storage helps maintain the long shelf-life and high performance of Ray Chemical products. If you have any questions regarding storage conditions in your specific region, please feel free to contact our technical team for advice.
