In the construction industry, the quality of a tile adhesive is often judged by two groups: the engineers who test the bond strength, and the workers who apply it all day. While strength is vital, the "workability" or "hand-feel" of the mortar determines how fast and how well a job gets done.
At Ray Chemical, we have developed Modified HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose) specifically to improve this experience, turning heavy, sticky mortars into smooth, easy-to-apply mixtures.
Applying tile adhesive is physically demanding. Standard mortars can be stiff and heavy, requiring significant effort to spread with a notched trowel.
The "Silky" Effect: Our modified HPMC provides excellent lubrication. It reduces the friction between the trowel and the mortar, allowing workers to spread the material with much less physical force.
Better Consistency: The mortar stays "creamy" and stable, making the workday less exhausting for the installation team.
A common fear for installers is "sagging"—when a heavy tile slides down the wall after being placed.
Thixotropic Properties: Modified HPMC gives the adhesive high thixotropy. This means the mortar becomes fluid when stirred or spread (making it easy to apply) but becomes thick and firm the moment it is at rest.
Anti-Slip Performance: This ensures that even large-format tiles stay exactly where the worker places them, reducing the need for constant readjustments.
Workers often face the pressure of mortar drying too quickly on the wall (skinning). If the adhesive dries too fast, the tiles will not stick properly. Our modified HPMC ensures high water retention, giving the workers a longer window to adjust tiles comfortably, even in dry or windy conditions.
By improving the "slip" of the trowel, we help reduce the repetitive strain on workers' wrists and shoulders. A "smooth" mortar not only speeds up the project but also contributes to a better working environment and higher application quality.
The "feel" of a tile adhesive can be adjusted by fine-tuning the grade and dosage of HPMC. Whether you are looking to create a premium "silky" adhesive or a standard high-grip mortar, Ray Chemical can provide the technical data and samples you need for your formula upgrades.
